In order to incorporate the Latest News section I had designed in my wireframes I had to add a widget to display the latest posts to the website in a continuous column. After using the recent posts function built into the theme I found it unsatisfying as it incorrectly displayed the thumbnails and the excerpt length could not be modified. After doing some looking around I settled on the Latest Posts plugin by Mrinal Kanti Roy as it had just the right level of custom features and displayed everything exactly how I wanted it. It also easily pulled the thumbnails from the posts featured image, which can be set to anything even if the post has no images within it.
